Bulshoek Dam is the home to many smallmouth and largemouth bass, so not really a fly fishing location, but still great if you’re into mixing things up a little.

The bulshoek dam is narrow, and sometimes a problem for anglers when jetskiers are racing up and down, but this can be overcome by moving further up the dam, which runs for 10km’s, situated alongside the N7. Bulshoek is about 20 kilometers or so past Clanwilliam, so it’s about 2 and a half hours drive into a beautiful lush greenland.

Boats are permitted on the dam and there’s a slipway you can use for a small fee, please note that skippers license and such will be required. There are some nice accommodation spots in the area too if you want to go for more than just a day – Look for Rondeberg Resort and Bulshoek Dam Resort.

Cost: Most of the dam is surrounded by private property, so it’s ideal to book accommodation
Fish: Large and smallmouth bass, and carp
Tackle: Spinners, Lures, etc.
Rating: Good
Catch and Release: No
Other: Canoe’s can be rented for fishing at R50 per day

One of the wonders about fly fishing in the Western Cape is the number of wine estates scattered around the various fly fishing destinations. Just around the corner from La Ferme is well-known wine estate, Graham Beck.

Graham Beck’s vineyards are spread across 4 large farms in the Western Cape. Marco Ventrella, the viticulturist looks after the 4 vineyards and ensures that the quality of wine remains top class. Each farm though, is looked after by various managers on the farms. These 4 farms are located in Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Robertson.

Graham Beck produces white wine, red wine, rose, dessert wine and method cap classique, so there’s something for everyone.

The Mrs. Simpson fly is a popular fly in the Western Cape. I’ve caught a couple big rainbows with this exact fly:

It’s not the easiest fly to tie, but it’s not impossible. Here’s a video tutorial which will teach you how to go about tying a Mrs Simpson:

Papyrus lodge is a wonderful location, with beaufitul gardens, stunning views and they have their very own lake. I made some calls and it is possible to fish there, so I’m heading through for a couple days over New Year to wet my line.

Looks like a really stunning location, can’t wait to get there!

Have you ever fished here?
