One of the wonders about fly fishing in the Western Cape is the number of wine estates scattered around the various fly fishing destinations. Just around the corner from La Ferme is well-known wine estate, Graham Beck.

Graham Beck’s vineyards are spread across 4 large farms in the Western Cape. Marco Ventrella, the viticulturist looks after the 4 vineyards and ensures that the quality of wine remains top class. Each farm though, is looked after by various managers on the farms. These 4 farms are located in Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Robertson.

Graham Beck produces white wine, red wine, rose, dessert wine and method cap classique, so there’s something for everyone.

Eikendal Fly Fishing

Eikendal Wine Estate is situated on the R44 road between Somerset West and Stellenbosch. It’s a 30 minute drive from Cape Town and is a beautiful location. Fly Talk run the fly fishing at the damn and Phillip, the on-site manager, has a tackle shop with every little goodie you could possibly think of, he’s also there to offer advice and if you’re just keen to give fly fishing a go, he’ll be more than happy to set you up with a rod and some guidelines.

The estate offers fly fishing on two dams, an upper and a lower, both which have rainbow trout and brown trout. I didn’t manage to catch in the 2 hours I was there, but I arrived late and couldn’t get myself into the zone, despite seeing at least 30 jumpers whilst throwing from the bank of the lower dam. Eikendal allows tubes on the lower dam, which would appear to be incredibly popular as there were more tubers than bankers.

Lourensford Estate, established in the year 1700 and once part of Willem Adriaan van der Stel’s Vergelegen, is arguably one of the most beautiful wine estates in the world. Steeped in history and heritage, the estate also boasts an ultra-modern winery utilising technology unique in the Southern Hemisphere. The magnificent soils and diverse micro-climates create the ideal terroir for world-beating wines. Lourensford is fast-becoming one of the sought after wine estates in South Africa, with over 300 hectares of vines already planted.

The Lourensford Fly-fishing Club offers a broad spectrum of fishing, from a 25ha dam, 6 km river fishing and stocked spring water pools. Membership (at a cost of R2250 + VAT pa) gives you access throughout the year via bookings. You get 1 free fish per month and you can bring 1 angling friend per month.

Unfortunately there is a long waiting list. You are best advised to complete this application form and return it as soon as possible (Gerhard Compion – gcompion@lourensford.co.za) so that your name can be added to the waiting list. You will then be contacted the minute a place becomes available.
